I. PUBLICAN’S CHOICE: LATE OPENING FOR THE PUBLIC HOUSE ON DERBY DAY, AND NEXT TUESDAY IS AN ELECTION.

Two advance notes for local readers:

(1) Rich O's Public House won't open until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, which is the first Saturday in May, which in turn is a Louisville area holy day known as Kentucky Derby. So many employees have called out festive that we have no one to work the afternoon shift. Sportstime Pizza will be open from 11:00 a.m. as usual.

(2) Next Tuesday, May 8, steel yourself for the annual nastiness of election day (municipal elections in New Albany), which means that the taps don't open until the polls close at 6:00 p.m. As is our long custom in recognition of the futility of being a fine beer bar that can't serve during the daytime hours on election day, Rich O's will open at 6:00 p.m. Sportstime will be open from 11:00 a.m. for a long, uninvitingly dry lunch.

II. PUBLICAN BUFFING AND POLISHING HIS PRESENTATION.

A massive bottle list overhaul is underway. The Publican apologizes for the time it has taken to implement these changes, which will include dropping a few non-performers, streamlining storage areas, and adding good brands like Gouden Carolus, Kasteel, Grotten Brown and eventually the Malheur and Maredous lines (all from Belgium), as well as more specialized American microbrews -- many in bombers (22 0z). The basic idea is to transform the bottle list into a collection of beer better suited for the bottle, as in the case of bottle-conditioned ales, while reserving other selections for pouring on draft.

Accordingly, I'm changing the way that draft beers for the guest taps are selected and ordered. The idea is for you not to notice much in the way of change, but to make it easier on the Publican's end by formalizing the rotation so that we see as many brands as possible in the course of the year .

Kaiser 2nd Reising ... Think of it as your great-grandfather’s pilsner.

V. CALENDAR OF EVENTS, HOURS AND RELATED FACTS.

General business hours:
Sportstime Pizza opens at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Rich O’s opens at 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We are not open on Sunday except during special events. The same food and beer is available at all times in both rooms, so you may have lunch and a beer in the Sportstime Pizza dining area during those hours when Rich O’s isn’t open. The brewery is available for a look-see if one of us is around and we’re not busy.

Smoking.

Rich O's: The front dining rooms at Rich O's are designated as non-smoking areas. The bar area and Red Room are open for smoking (cigarettes, cigars, pipes). We strongly discourage clove cigarettes, which are divisive even among smokers.

Sportstime: Smoking is permitted in the entirety of Sportstime Pizza.

Wi-Fi.

Both dining areas are hotspots. Please observe proper etiquette when using our Wi-Fi service, and do not disturb or offend others with the Anheuser-Busch web site or other examples of web-borne smut.

2007 events:

Weekly on Thursday evening @ 7:00 p.m.
