I. PUBLICAN’S CHOICE: HOOSIER DADDY ART SHOW 3.0 IN THE PROST ROOM THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.

NABC's Hoosier Daddy Art Show is scheduled for Mother's Day Weekend (May 10th,11th & 12th). This third edition in the Prost wing of the building gets under way on Thursday.

I can’t tell you how proud I am of our employees, who’ve done every bit of the heavy lifting necessary to mount these productions. Just this past Sunday I found myself in conversation with a person who was lamenting the state of the nation’s youth in the current day and age. I've generally never agreed with such pronouncements, and judging from the way our twenty-somethings have handled responsibility when it comes to these art shows, I’m here to tell you that the criticism is misdirected.

Of course there’ll be beer, too.

Here's the preview from guiding light Kevin Dennis.

II. NABC BREWING NEWS: CRAFT BEER AS AN AGENT OF CHANGE IN DOWNTOWN NEW ALBANY.

The New Albanian Brewing Company is very pleased to report that we continue our support of revitalization in downtown New Albany. As many readers know, like many other downtown business districts, New Albany’s has been moribund for decades, but recently a diverse cross-section of people have been working hard to recast the area into a distinctive borough within the greater Louisville metropolitan area. At NABC we’re completely supportive of locally owned destination businesses, walkable and livable surrounding neighborhoods, beercycling, and all the virtues that flow from creativity and uniqueness in beer and life.

NABC’s contribution to the cause comes in the form of locally handcrafted draft beer, which now is now available at the following downtown establishments – but not in the city of Louisville. We want discerning Kentuckians to spend their beer money here, right?

Bistro New Albany (founded April 2006) offers fine dining in the historic New Albany Inn hotel building at 148 E. Market. BNA has an excellent patio in temperate weather, and four or five NABC beers always on draft.

Connor’s Place, with relaxed sports bar ambience and casual dining in a historic building at 207 E. Main Street, is the newest downtown entry, and slated to open Friday, May11. Former BNA partner Dave Himmel has another knockout outdoor seating area and two or three NABC beers always on tap.

The Speakeasy has a scheduled opening date of early June, 2007, and will be a bar, eatery and musical venue specializing in jazz and the blues. It is located in yet another historic commercial building at 225 State Street – just a stone’s throw from New Albany’s Scribner Place redevelopment project, which includes a YMCA and natatorium (completion should be in 2008). At least two NABC beers will be on tap at the Speakeasy.

Beer as an agent of change? Believe it.

V. MASSIVE BOTTLE LIST OVERHAUL UNDERWAY.

The Publican apologizes for the time it has taken to implement these changes, which will include dropping a few non-performers, streamlining storage areas, and adding good brands like Gouden Carolus, Kasteel, Grotten Brown and eventually the Malheur and Maredous lines (all from Belgium), as well as more specialized American microbrews -- many in bombers (22 0z).

The basic idea is to transform the bottle list into a collection of beer better suited for the bottle, as in the case of bottle-conditioned ales, while reserving other selections for pouring on draft.

Accordingly, I'm changing the way that draft beers for the guest taps are selected and ordered. The idea is for you not to notice much in the way of change, but to make it easier on the Publican's end by formalizing the rotation so that we see as many brands as possible in the course of the year .

VI. CALENDAR OF EVENTS, HOURS AND RELATED FACTS.

General business hours:
Sportstime Pizza opens at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Rich O’s opens at 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We are not open on Sunday except during special events. The same food and beer is available at all times in both rooms, so you may have lunch and a beer in the Sportstime Pizza dining area during those hours when Rich O’s isn’t open. The brewery is available for a look-see if one of us is around and we’re not busy.

Smoking.

Rich O's: The front dining rooms at Rich O's are designated as non-smoking areas. The bar area and Red Room are open for smoking (cigarettes, cigars, pipes). We strongly discourage clove cigarettes, which are divisive even among smokers.

Both dining areas are hotspots. Please observe proper etiquette when using our Wi-Fi service, and do not disturb or offend others with the Anheuser-Busch web site or other examples of web-borne smut.
