I. PUBLICAN'S CHOICE: WE WELCOME WI-FI.

There have been times in the past when I've refused to use a computer or a mobile phone ... and times sure do change. As proof, recently our good friend and customer John Doyle kicked around the office suite for a few hours, and when the dust settled, we were enabled for wireless Internet access. Both dining areas are now hotspots. Please observe proper etiquette when using our WI-FI service, and do not disturb or offend others with the Anheuser-Busch web site or other examples of web-borne smut.

II. LUPULIN LAND HARVEST HOP FESTIVAL 2006 CONTINUES TO SPREAD BITTER CHEER THROUGHOUT OUR BUILDING.

Lupulin Land 2006 continues the Public House and Pizzeria. Here's the current draft lineup, an updated schedule, and the current status of keg orders.

On tap now:

Our usual suspects (hoppy ales always on tap):

Coming Friday, October 27:

Randall the Enamel Animal returns to modify BBC (Main & Clay) Alt.

Order and availability status:

Great Divide Hercules Double IPA is in stock and ready to tap when a spot comes open.

Probably here by Tuesday, October 31: Cask-conditioned BBC Beer Company (Main & Clay) American Pale Ale. To allow for conditioning, the firkin will not be tapped before November 6.

Coming in early November: Bell’s Hop Slam Imperial IPA.

Already gone:

III. NABC BREWING NEWS: EXPERIMENTS IN COLORING SMOKE BLACK, AND A RETURNING ENGLISH FAVORITE.

Using the California Common yeast that fermented Mt. Lee (now depleted) and the Homecoming Common (now on tap at NABC and Bistro New Albany after an exclusive run during bNA's Harvest Homecoming beer garden), Jesse and Jared have brewed a unique Schwarz Rauch Bier that will be ready for consumption later in November. This black-colored smoker was brewed with Weyermann smoked malt from Bamberg, and is without precedent in classical style guidelines.

A new batch of St. Radegund -- in essence, a recalibrated Beak's Best -- also has been brewed, and we'll be seeing firkins of it on the hand pump now that the weather has cooled and cask ale season has returned. Owing to an alcohol content in the mid-5's, St. Radegund probably is best regarded as a Extra Special/Strong Bitter (English Pale Ale).

Brewed in New Albany by NABC’s Jesse Williams, with assistance from Jared Williamson.

Bob's Old 15-B ... We're calling it a robust, brown Porter precisely because style definitions were meant to be bent.

Croupier IPA ... Jesse's homage to our casino employee clientele is modeled on the English interpretation, with a few American flourishes.

Elector ... Making Democracy pointless since 2002; English malt, American hops. 7.2% abv. Double Red?

Homecoming Common ... Stylistically indeterminate, session "steam beer" variant, amber in color, and with less hop bite than most NABC beers. An autumn pounder.

Hoptimus ... Brewed with Simpson's Golden Promise malt; Northern Brewer, Fuggles and Cascades hops; and fermented with the house London ale yeast. It is dry-hopped in the kegs with Fuggles and Cascades. The OG is 1.094, and IBU's are somewhere around 100.

VII. EVENTS, HOURS AND RELATED FACTS.

General business hours:

Sportstime Pizza opens at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Rich O’s opens at 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We are not open on Sunday except during special events. The same food and beer is available at all times in both rooms, so you may have lunch and a beer in the Sportstime Pizza dining area during those hours when Rich O’s isn’t open. The brewery is available for a look-see if one of us is around and we’re not busy.

Rich O's: The front dining rooms at Rich O's are designated as non-smoking areas. The bar area and Red Room are open for smoking (cigarettes, cigars, pipes). We strongly discourage clove cigarettes, which are divisive even among smokers.

Sportstime: Smoking is permitted in the entirety of Sportstime Pizza.

2006/2007 events:

Weekly on Thursday evening @ 7:00 p.m.

Drinking Liberally (New Albany & Southern Indiana) meets in the Red Room each Thursday. Contact organizer Lacy Davis for details.

----

Tuesday, November 7

Election/Elector Day

Sportstime Pizza will be open as usual for a very dry lunch owing to laws that prohibit the sale of alcohol while the polls are open, under the dubious wisdom that those afflicted with sobriety vote more intelligently than others who profess intoxication.

Rich O's Public House opens at 6:00 p.m., and because the mid-term elections hold the promise of high entertainment value, we'll be breaking with policy and plugging in a television set or two. Also, beginning at 6:00 p.m., the first 50 customers (that's right - one per state in the Union) buying a pint of NABC beer at the regular price will have it served in a signature glass, and get to keep the glass afterwards (you rinse).

Friday, December 15

Saturnalia MMVI

NABC, Rich O’s Public House and Sportstime Pizza pay tribute to the ancient pagan origins of Christmas with Saturnalia, a draft beer festival showcasing seasonal specialties and festive ales.

I. PUBLICAN'S CHOICE: AL SUR MUSIC AND DANCE ENSEMBLE PERFORMING AT PROST ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21.

Submitted by Amy Baylor, co-owner of NABC.

Hi Everyone! I'm very excited to announce a special musical evening on Saturday Oct. 21st with Al Sur at Prost!, the banquet room next to Rich O's.

"Al Sur is a music/dance ensemble specializing in the performance of original and traditional Spanish Flamenco art forms. Featuring some of the finest performers in the region, . . . al Sur presents high-octane dance, vocal, and instrumental numbers firmly rooted in the rich Andalusian gypsy tradition. Most numbers are original works composed by the ensemble and feature timbre colors ranging from expressive, exotic vocals and traditional dance footwork to frenetic guitar, throbbing percussion, and the plaintive tones of the bowed contrabass."

If you've never seen this show you are in for an experience! I was fortunate enough to catch them at the Jazz Factory a while back and I must admit that I was truly moved. You can read more about the group at their web site: http://www.alsurflamenco.com/.

The doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and the show will begin at 8:00 p.m. The cost to get in is only $10, but seating is very limited, so I am suggesting that you come early. We will have a few tables open in the back "15-B room" for those interested in eating before the show. Beer will be available throughout the show.

If you have any questions please call me at 502-821-4475 or Reva Young at 812-989-6178. Hope to see you there!

III. BISTRO NEW ALBANY BEER GARDEN SURVIVES HARVEST HOMECOMING.

I've yet to receive a final tally of blown kegs for the three-day run, but around six NABC half-barrels were dispensed, and good beer downtown during Harvest Homecoming looks to be a tenable notion. If you have thoughts or suggestions, throw them this way and I'll pass along to the Daves.

See you next year!

That's a tough act to follow, but also currently available is Podkovan Dark Lager from the Czech Republic, which is a low-gravity, sweetish lager according to the familiar Central European model, and Founders Bad Habit Belgian Quad (9.8% abv), another in a series of savory Founders seasonals, integrating the alcohol content quite well, and with loads of Belgian-style esters.

I. PUBLICAN'S CHOICE: LUPULIN LAND HARVEST HOP FESTIVAL 2006 BEGINS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13.

We’ll be exceeding OSHA’s legal limits on IBU’s per square foot of floor space when Lupulin Land 2006 begins on Friday, October 13. It is our fifth harvest hop celebration, and a good occasion for Kentuckiana’s hopheads to unite over a pint or two of America’s most bitter beer.

For a newly updated beer list, go here: UPDATED: Lupulin Land Harvest Hop Festival 2006 -- coming Friday, October 13.

I've been so busy with this and the Bistro's Harvest Homecoming beer garden (see next item) that the starting lineup for Lupulin Land won't be known until I drag into work on Friday morning and set the taps. For more information, go here: The Lupulin Land starting lineup won't be decided until Friday.

II. BISTRO NEW ALBANY, NEW ALBANIAN BREWING COMPANY, NORTH VERNON BEVERAGE CO., AND GOOD BEER DOWNTOWN IN NEW ALBANY DURING HARVEST HOMECOMING.

New Albany’s critically acclaimed Bistro New Albany is joining with the New Albanian Brewing Company and North Vernon Beverage Company to host a downtown New Albany beer garden to coincide with “booth days” at the city’s annual Harvest Homecoming festival.

The beer garden will be located on Bank Street adjacent to bNA’s outdoor patio, and opening hours will parallel those of the booths on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 12-14. The Bistro is located at the corner of Bank and Market Streets in downtown New Albany.

The New Albanian Brewing Company has brewed a special amber lager, which will be served exclusively at the Bistro’s beer garden. Other NABC microbrews (Croupier, Elector, Bob’s Old 15-B) will be served, as will a selection of craft and imported beers (Upland Wheat, Upland Oktoberfest, Sierra Nevada, etc), the latter courtesy of North Vernon Beverage Co.

A short menu of food (grouper sandwiches, pulled pork, chicken wings, etc) will be served daily in the Bistro’s beer garden, and musical entertainment will be provided on Friday and Saturday evenings (8:00 p.m.) with performances by Sativa Gumbo, NABC brewer Jared Williamson’s popular local four-piece band.

The Bistro’s beer garden is neither affiliated with Harvest Homecoming, nor is a sponsor of any officially sanctioned event during Harvest Homecoming, which is by far New Albany’s largest annual civic celebration, drawing tens of thousands of natives and visitors to the city.

NABC is overjoyed to help the Bistro and North Vernon Beverage in providing good beer to festival attendees, and we look forward to this birth of a vibrant new October tradition in New Albany.

Other NABC microbrews (Croupier, Elector, Bob’s Old 15-B, Community Dark) will be served, as will a selection of craft and imported beers (Upland Wheat, Upland Oktoberfest, Sierra Nevada, Newcastle, Stella Artois), the latter courtesy of North Vernon Beverage Co.

A short menu of food will be served daily in the Bistro’s beer garden, and musical entertainment will be provided on Friday and Saturday evenings with performances by Sativa Gumbo, NABC brewer Jared Williamson’s popular local four-piece band.

II. LUPULIN LAND HARVEST HOP FESTIVAL 2006 BEGINS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13.

Residents of New Albany should note that the Harvest Homecoming Parade takes place on the previous Saturday (October 7), and Booth Days run from the 12th through the 15th (see above for bNA and NABC beer garden details).

The delivery timing on the three "fresh hop" ales listed for the festival (Bell's, Great Divide and Sierra Nevada) is going to be tricky, so they may not appear until later in October.

Randall the Enamel Animal will be brought back for a second appearance at Lupulin Land. Details will be provided soon.

Roughly 10-14 of these will be on tap when the fest opens, in addition to the everyday beers.

III. NABC BREWERY NEWS: GEARING UP FOR HARVEST HOMECOMING WITH NEW BEER.

We’re optimistic that this year’s Harvest Homecoming booth days will be the first of many that will see local beer aficionados stopping by Bistro New Albany for a pint before braving the sea of humanity for inexplicable elephant ears and rote political party solicitations.

Jesse and Jared have brewed a batch of Hallertauer-hopped lager (with California Common yeast -- I erred last week in my description) that we'll have on hand at bNA's beer garden for Harvest Homecoming. We're still debating the name, but it is certain that the beer will be exclusive at the beer garden, and won't be served anywhere else. Read this PC article for Harvest Homecoming background:

There'll be good beer at Harvest Homecoming this year, thanks to Bistro New Albany.

IV. GOOD NEWS IN THE DRAFT BEER REALM: GUIDO, BELL'S OCTOBERFEST AND DOGFISH PUNKIN.

On draft now:

Regenboog Guido
Brouwerij de Regenboog, Brugge, Belgium
Circa 8% abv
Brewed to commemorate poet, priest and Flemish language proponent Guido Gezelle, a Brugge native son. Johan adds raisins and honey to create a formidable dark ale.

Bell’s Octoberfest Beer
Bell’s Brewery, Kalamazoo, Michigan
5.5% abv
The Bells version of the Bavarian seasonal lager – with the spelling in English, sans –k.

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Milton, Delaware
7% abv
Brown ale with pumpkin and brown sugar.

V. A REMINDER: UNAVOIDABLE NEWS IN THE DRAFT BEER REALM.

Draft beer prices are going up, effective Monday, October 9. Most beers in my clusters of pricing tiers will rise by a quarter (.25) per pint, which represents far less than a 10% increase, but one that's become inevitable given the higher wholesale prices for guest beers and the increased cost of raw materials for NABC products.

Our NABC beers.
Brewed in New Albany by NABC’s Jesse Williams, with assistance from Jared Williamson.

Artemsia Ale ... Brown ale brewed with 80% Simpson's Golden Promise two-row and molasses, and flavored with mugwort (the "dream herb," related to sagebrush and a cousin of wormwood), sweet orange peel and chamomile. 4.5% abv.

Bob's Old 15-B ... We're calling it a robust, brown Porter precisely because style definitions were meant to be bent.

Community Dark ... Based on English Mild, and our light-bodied dark quaffer. 5% abv.

Croupier IPA ... Jesse's homage to our casino employee clientele is modeled on the English interpretation, with a few American flourishes.

Elector ... Making Democracy pointless since 2002; English malt, American hops. 7.2% abv. Double Red?

Mt. Lee ... California Common, in the style of the famous brand which trademarked the name "steam." Get my drift?

VIII. BOTTLED BEER NEWS: CHATEAU JIAHU, FOUNDERS BAD HABIT AND PODKOVAN DARK LAGER.

In stock this week ...

750 ml bottles of Dogfish Head Chateau Jiahu. It is based on 9,000-year-old evidence of fermentables in China: "In keeping with historic evidence, Dogfish brewers used pre-gelatinized rice flakes, Wildflower honey, Muscat grapes, barley malt, hawthorn fruit, and Chrysanthemum flowers."
