I. PUBLICAN'S CHOICE: FOSSILS PUNGENT & FUNKY APPETIZER COMPETITION AND MEETING THIS SATURDAY, JANUARY 20 AT PROST.

For those who don't know, FOSSILS (Fermenters of Special Southern Indiana Libations Society) has been in operation since September, 1990. In 1994, the much beloved culinary institution known as the Pungent & Funky Appetizer Competition came into being, and ironically, it was held that first year in the office suite that now, 13 riotous years later, has been remodeled into Prost - NABC's special events and banquet area.

And that's where the January FOSSILS meeting and cooking contest will be held this Saturday evening. Following are pertinent factoids as gleaned from the current club newsletter. If you are not a member of FOSSILS, there's no better time than now to get involved. It isn't necessary to be a homebrewer. It's plenty enough to love beer and cherish fine people and good times.

Get Pungent & Funky with FOSSILS on January 20

Remember, this marks our switch to a Saturday meeting schedule in 2007.

Date: Saturday, January 20

Time: 6:30 p.m. ~ Gathering and homebrew sharing (and contest check-in, see below)

7:15 p.m. ~ Meeting and announcements

Location: Prost! Room at Rich O’s Public House

Pungent & Funky

Trek into the culinary abyss with the ever-creative and courageous members of FOSSILS as we bravely voyage beyond customary hors d'oeuvres ... far, far beyond the world of mozzarella sticks and potato skins. Entries should embody the spirit of pungency and funkiness in which this contest was fashioned by the founding members of FOSSILS, yet be edible (by most, anyway). Interesting presentation may net additional points.

Awards will be presented in four categories:

Most Pungent
Funkiest
Brew Food (pungent, funky & beer as an integral ingredient)
Best of Show

This year's panel of guest judges includes Courier-Journal Food Editor Sarah Fritchner, Capriole Farms owner Judy Schad, resident food expert Maggie Oster and 2006 P&F winner Bob Capshew. Judging will begin promptly at 7 p.m., so please sign in with your entry/entries before then.

January Guests

Members from two Cincinnati-area homebrew clubs will be in town visiting local breweries on Saturday and they have been invited to join our FOSSILS meeting. It will be a great opportunity to share news of brewing competitions and festivals as well as quality watering holes and shopping stops in our respective communities.

II. CALENDAR WATCH: CHILI, ART SHOW, SUPER BOWL AND FIRST QUARTER BEER DINNERS AT STRATTO'S, CLASSICO AND THE BISTRO NEW ALBANY.

Monday, January 29: “Stratto's Beer Dinner with the Publican”

Thursday, February 1: Jeffersonville Main Street Chili & Beer Tasting

Sunday, February 4: NABC/Sportstime Super Bowl opening hours, 4:00 p.m. until the game's over.

Saturday, February 10: Caffe Classico Belgian Beer & Appetizer Pairing

Scroll down to the end of this week's edition (CALENDAR OF EVENTS, HOURS AND RELATED FACTS) for further information.

III. NABC BREWING NEWS: BEN FRANKLIN'S OLD LIGHTNING ROD ON TAP NOW.

Last week I got the order reversed. That's because earlier this week, the second annual batch of Old Lightning Rod ("that Ben Franklin beer") hit the taps for a limited engagement. NABC's next release will be Kaiser 2nd Reising, our pre-Prohibition pilsner, which will begin flowing upon the demise of the first of two Saturnalia seasonals. Batches of St. Radegund and Hoosier Daddy have been put to bed. Look for them on tap soon.

I. PUBLICAN'S CHOICE: POST HOLIDAY HANGOVERS & RESOLUTIONS.

We're finally past Christmas and New Year's, past Louisville's bowl game story of the century, and past the year 2006, which itself was a fairly good one as years go.

It's always hectic at the beginning of a new year. Just like individuals, businesses have to-do lists of resolutions and projects. Earlier in the week, I repaired a half-dozen picture frames that had been damaged over the preceding months; began to seriously consider the choices for Gravity Head; and took a long, hard look at the bottled beer list with an eye toward the complete revamp promised here earlier this winter.

I hope we can afford an outdoor walk-in for the brewery as an aid in increasing brewing production, and that some money will be left over to begin work on the long-delayed outdoor seating area. We need audio-visual equipment for Prost. And so it goes.

Saturnalia continues, and its list has been folded into the usual draft list below. Don't forget the (Your Name Here)Fest contest deadline of January 15. If you intend to enter, be sure and submit your essays before then. If you don't know what I'm talking about, scroll down to the calendar section and follow the link.

Happy 2007 from all of us at NABC.

II. THIS IS NOT ABOUT BEER, BUT ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIVE IN NEW ALBANY, YOU ARE INVITED TO PEEK IN.

I'm mentioning this in the NABC newsletter solely as a means of reaching some New Albanians who might have missed my reports of news on the civic front, as provided in my "other" blog. Read on, and be aware that while I'm not trying to exclude anyone, the gathering described is designed to be for those with an interest in the condition that the city of New Albany's condition is in.

On January 8 at 7: 00 p.m., it's "Confidentiaholics Identified."

This is being designed as a very informal meet 'n' greet for readers and friends of the Publican's side project, NA Confidential blog, and by extension, the New Albany blogosphere itself.

However, you're not required to have a computer to attend. There'll be no set agenda beyond getting to know one another, widening the circle of faces to names, and chatting about local issues. All citizens are welcome. Tribune forum readers, owners and readers of other local blogs, sincere political hopefuls, innocent bystanders, whatever; we’ll be in the Prost banquet room, and there’s enough room for 50 or more.

It wasn’t my intention to have the gathering at my place of business, but this was the wish of those initially responding to the idea. If it looks like something we’ll try to do again, and I think we should, and often, then we can spread the wealth to other establishments in New Albany with no objections from me.

Bring a friend or a neighbor if you please. See you on the 8th.

III. FROM THE HAND PULL: NABC STRATHPEFFER NEARING DEPLETION.

As part of the ongoing Saturnalia festivities, NABC Strathpeffer (heather/gruit ale) is on the hand pull. It may be gone by the time you read this. If you missed a taste, make your own resolution: Never again doubt the wisdom of the Publican. It is/was very good.

There also are two cask-conditioned English ales on order from B. United International, but I'm learning from the past and will wait to preview them until the firkins are in my grubby little hands.
