I. DIFFERENT YEAR, SAME TREACHERY AT THE INDIANA GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

With Indiana's General Assembly in session, the House is doing its level best to deprive wine and beer consumers of free choice, and to hamper the ability of small, artisanal producers to do business.

Legislative update: Two Indiana House bills that restrict consumer choice by targeting small breweries and wineries.

Both the bills in question have passed the House and now will be considered, subject to amendment and alteration, in the Senate. At the end of the article linked above, there are e-mail links to use for letting your Senator know what you think. Please use them.

II. DRAFT REGENBOOG ALES FROM BELGIUM: 'T SMISJE BLONDE AND WOSTYNTJE.

Johan Brandt's Regenboog brewery is one of Belgium's smaller craft beer outposts, and his beers are perhaps underappreciated even though they're imported by the excellent B. United International. Wostyntje and 't Smisje Blond -- of first two of four Regenboog kegs in stock -- currently are on tap:

Mustard seeds, Linden blossoms, and the expressive world of Regenboog.

The next two will be seen at Gravity Head: 't Smisje Dubbel (9% abv) and 't Smisje Kerst (Christmas ale; 11% abv).

III. CASK CONDITIONED ALE NOW POURING: RCH OLD SLUG PORTER.

As of Wednesday, February 8, RCH Old Slug Porter is pouring from the Rich O's hand pump, and two other cask-conditioned firkins -- NABC Elector and Harvey's Sussex Best are queued (links mended).

When one is depleted, the next will be tapped the following morning to allow stillage time. As a reminder, we're able to do this because we started using a cask breather, a device that replaces head space in the firkin with short bursts of CO2, thus preserving the life of the ale.

Firkins of Old Engine Oil Special Reserve, (Scotch barrel-aged) and Gale’s Christmas Ale will be served by hand pump during Gravity Head 2006, as will a selection of JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale (by gravity feed). See End of January update: "Gravity Head 2006: Reality ABV" advance orders preview.

IV. NABC BREWERY NEWS: NEXT STOP, GRAVITY HEAD.

The fourth serving tank soon will be filled with Elector, and our goal of having all four in operation will have been reached. Jesse and Jared have finished another batch of Hoptimus, which will continue to be kegged and dry-hopped in the kegs.

Hoptimus will be on tap during Gravity Head, but not listed. However, NABC will have two stalwarts present for duty: NABC Stumble Bus (2005; circa 10% abv) and the brand new NABC Thunderfoot Imperial Stout (10% abv).

If the evolution of Thunderfoot continues on its present trajectory -- and I have no doubt whatsoever that this will be the case -- you are going to be amazed.

Check out Tony Beard's artwork: Three new NABC beer "labels," and more on the way.

V. BISTRO NEW ALBANY TEMPORARILY ON HOLD, BUT WE REMAIN OPTIMISTIC THAT ALL WILL BE WELL IN THE END.

Read it here: Bistro New Albany temporarily on hold. I'll try as best I can to keep readers updated on breaking developments.

VI. GRAVITY HEAD 2006 BEGINS ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24.

Final preparations are being made, shirt designs sent to Tim, and Syd's cot made up with fresh linen.

Gravity Head orders have topped 50 kegs for the first time ever: End of January update: "Gravity Head 2006: Reality ABV" advance orders preview.

Our banquet room, Prost, will be available for group seating on the 24th, but you must contact me about group seating possibilities for Gravity Head opening night.

This will be the eighth Gravity Head. Learn more about the past in "A brief history of Gravity Head, 1999-2006."

And, remember that NABC's Thunderfoot Imperial Stout to be released for Gravity Head 2006.

IX. NEW, AND IN SOME CASES RARE, ROTATING BOTTLED SELECTIONS.

Remember to check the chalkboard in the front room at Rich O’s for bottled specials and seasonals. These are the bottled beers not carried on the everyday bottled list, and represent a wide variety of flavors and textures for your tasting enjoyment.

Quantities.

Of the bottles described below, Zinnebir X-mas, N'Ice Chouffe and Breckinridge 471 are depleted to three bottles or less remaining in stock. There are less than six of the De Dolle Special Extra Export Stout. While this doesn't imply that we'll not have them again, it may be a while.

New Dogfish Head ales.

Burton Baton, a mix of oak-aged English strong ale and 90 Minute IPA, has a big malt backdrop but not as much hop as you'd think. 12 oz; 10% abv.

Fort … 750 ml … Ready? It’s Dogfish Head’s raspberry ale (a ton per batch), clocking in at 18% abv.

Pangaea … 750 ml … Using an ingredient from each continent, and named for the “super continent” that existed prior to the split. 7% abv.

Raison D’Extra … 12 oz … Dogfish’s Raison d’Etre, but jacked up on steroids to the tune of 18.5% abv.

New Belgians.

Bink Winterkoningske (Winter King) - 11.2 oz - Dark, malty, and spiced with juniper berries and lavender, this 8.3% winter warmer from the tiny Kerkom brewery is the Belgian equivalent of Anchor's great Christmas Ale, though a tad sweeter.

Ecaussinnes Ultra - 11.2 oz - Fruity and very drinkable amber ale of 7% abv, and reputedly spiced, which might account for a light finishing bitterness that doesn’t taste like hops.

New Bombers.

Arcadia Hopmouth Double IPA - 22 oz - Big Maris Otter malt backdrop, nicely balanced fresh hop character with sufficient bitterness.

Breckinridge 471 Small Batch Double Hopped IPA - 22 oz - Fine entry level Double IPA, with a drier, grassy hop bite.

Previously posted, and still available in limited quantities:

De Dolle Special Extra Export Stout - 11.2 oz - Reflect on Kris's typically eccentric take on a rare (export stout) beer style.

Jolly Pumpkin Luciernaga "The Fire Fly" - 750 ml - Try this on for size ... an oak-barrel aged, bottle-conditioned "pale ale brewed in the Grand Cru tradition" with coriander and Grains of Paradise. Subtle and incredible. Also, don't forget Jolly Pumpkin Oro de Calabaza and Jolly Pumpkin La Roja. These almost certainly will be added to the everyday beer list this spring.

Jopen Koyt - 750 ml - Dutch "gruit" (spiced) ale from Haarlem, near Amsterdam, home of my good friend Boris and the outstanding Cafe Briljant, where I wish I could be drinking Jopen ales right now.

N'Ice Chouffe - 750 ml - From those creative "gnomes" in the Ardennes comes a longtime favorite seasonal winter warmer (10% abv). Dark and deep, but deceptively drinkable.

Panil Barriquee - 750 ml - Flemish style sour red ale brewed in Italy (this is not a misprint) and aged in cognac barrels. A bona fide classic, and probably the best "new" bottled beer at Rich O's in 2005.

Fantome Saison – 750 ml – Eclectic Ardennes elixir, with a spicy fruitiness and an unmistakably wild, yeasty elegance.

Zinnebir X-mas – 750 ml – Little is known about this tiny brewery, and its X-mas ale is the first Zinnebir product we’ve ever had, here or in Belgium. If you try one, please take notes and share with the Publican (who’ll get around to his bottle in time).

I. CRAFT BEER VS. IRON CITY: SPORTSTIME PIZZA WILL OPEN FOR SUPER BOWL XL ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5.

As in recent years, Sportstime Pizza will be open on Super Bowl Sunday. The doors will open at 5:30 pm, with last call at 10:30 pm and closing at 11:00 pm. The full menu of food, minus soup and chili, will be available for dining in or carrying out. Remember that there are no carry-out beer sales in Indiana on Sunday!

II. CASK CONDITIONED ALES (FINALLY) READY TO POUR: NABC BOB'S OLD 15-B; HARVEY'S SUSSEX BEST & RCH OLD SLUG PORTER QUEUED AND READY FOR ACTION.

Beginning Friday, February 3, three cask-conditioned firkins are queued and ready to travel to waiting glasses via the hand pump. When one is depleted, the next will be tapped the following morning.

NABC Bob's Old 15-B (Porter)

Harvey's Sussex Best

RCH Old Slug Porter

Firkins of Harviestoun Old Engine Oil Special Reserve (Scotch barrel-aged) and Gale’s Christmas Ale will be served by hand pump during Gravity Head 2006, as will a selection of JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale (by gravity feed). III. NABC BREWERY NEWS: CROUPIER IPA AND BOB'S OLD 15-B ON TAP; OLD LIGHTNING ROD NEARING THE END OF THE RUN; NEXT HOPTIMUS DUE IN TWO WEEKS.

Croupier IPA and Bob's Old 15-B have joined Community Dark in the serving tanks, and Elector's joining them soon. Hoptimus, currently depleted but back in two weeks, will continue to be kegged (and dry-hopped in the kegs).

Some of you have noticed the darker hue of the Croupier and asked if the recipe has changed. It has not, and if you close your eyes, you'll find the flavor to be exactly as you remember it.

It seems that the current batch of Croupier was fermented with the yeast slurry from the batch of Thunderfoot Imperial Stout (it's black as the proverbial ink), with the result that the beer looks like Community Dark, not the rich orange/amber as before.

Check out Tony Beard's artwork: Three new NABC beer "labels," and more on the way.

IV. LAST-MINUTE DELAYS PROVE PROBLEMATIC AS BISTRO NEW ALBANY PREPARES FOR OPENING.

Okay, I'll 'fess up -- in my eagerness to help the owners tout the forthcoming Bistro New Albany, I've been consistently jumping the gun with regard to their opening date.

I apologize for that.

As of this writing, I'm waiting for the next update from our intrepid downtown bistro pioneers, and I'll pass it along when it hits the wire. It could be February 6th, or February 13. Patience indeed is a virtue, and there are numerous last-minute details attached to any opening ... and at some point, we'll have forgotten the delays.

Okay?

As a reminder, NABC intends to supply at least three draft beers to Bistro New Albany, increasing to four or five when supply permits. There will two or three BBC beers on tap, as well as guests like Spaten and Sierra Nevada. Greg plans a short bottled list of beers, and a well-stocked wine cellar.

Publicanista! ... January 26, 2006.

In this edition of Publicanista!:

Did the stray keg of Dark Horse Tres Blueberry Stout finally cross the threshold? Come this weekend and find out.

As NABC serving tanks come on line, the recipe for Thunderfoot Imperial Stout is divulged.

New downtown Bistro New Albany hopes for a January 30 (Monday) opening.

Purely random reading at the Potable Curmudgeon's beer blog.

Current draft beer lineup.

Three (soon four) first-time Dogfish Head craft brews appearing on the Rich O's rotating bottle list selections; also new Belgians and bombers.

Cask-conditioned English firkins finally have been shipped. Maybe.

Hours, calendar of events and esoterica.

I. IS DARK HORSE TRES BLUEBERRY STOUT FINALLY HERE? EVEN THE OWNER DOESN'T KNOW FOR SURE.

Just before leaving work today, I received an e-mail indicating that the elusive and long delayed Dark Horse Tres Blueberry Stout (a Saturnalia selection) keg is supposed to be delivered on Thursday. If this is the case, I'll get it on tap as soon as possible.

But I won't believe it until I see it. Not after this long.

II. NABC BREWERY NEWS: SERVING TANKS COMING ON LINE, AND BATCHES OF CROUPIER IPA AND BOB'S OLD 15-B PUT TO BED.

Last week the switch was flipped and beer flowed to the draft station from the first of four serving tanks to see action. The remaining three will be filled in the next couple of weeks as batches of Croupier IPA, Bob's Old 15-B and Elector join Community Dark as the "Big Four" on tap most of the year at Rich O's and Sportstime. Hoptimus also will be available much of the time, but will continue to be kegged (and dry-hopped in the kegs).

A month ago, Jesse squeezed in a batch of what the brew crew is calling Thunderfoot Imperial Stout (circa 10% to 12% abv), and it will debut at Gravity Head on February 24. Here are some specs.

Malts: 75% Simpson's Golden Promise 2-row; 10% roasted barley; 5% dark crystal malt; 7% sugar and 3% oats.

Hops: Northern Brewer in the boil, the Northern Brewer, Willamette and Cascade (four further additions).

Yeast: The house London ale yeast.

Dried tart cherries were in the hopback, and dried Bing cherries (and oak chips) are in the Brite tanks.

It's yet to be seen what the cherries will do for the finished stout, which has matured startlingly from week to week since being brewed, but Thunderfoot is rounding into something very intriguing and should be a match for the other Imperial Stouts booked for Gravity Head.

NABC's final January priority is preparing for demand at the soon-to-open Bistro New Albany (see below).

Check out Tony Beard's artwork: Three new NABC beer "labels," and more on the way.

III. UPDATE: BISTRO NEW ALBANY STILL HOPING FOR A JANUARY 30 OPENING.

Jan. 27 update: Bistro New Albany reschedules opening for February 6.

I'm waiting for an update from downtown New Albany bistro pioneers Greg Merz and Dave Clancy as to whether January 30 will be opening day for Bistro New Albany.

NABC intends to supply at least three draft beers to Bistro New Albany, increasing to four or five when supply permits. There will two or three BBC beers on tap, as well as guests like Spaten and Sierra Nevada. Greg plans a short bottled list of beers, and a well-stocked wine cellar.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Bistro New Albany stands to be a turning point for the city's reviving downtown business district.

Note: In the end, our wholesaler did not have Sierra Nevada (draft) Pale Ale in stock for almost a month, accounting for its absence. As noted here last week, owing to the state of Indiana's laws, I cannot buy the product from another wholesaler, leading to the fairly ridiculous situation recently experienced, wherein the company with the exclusive rights to sell it, doesn't have it to sell. Having consulted with the Sierra Nevada higher-ups, I'm told that the problem has been corrected -- but before Sierra Nevada returns, we'll be auditioning Schlafly's pale ale (see below). VI.

New Dogfish Head ales.

Burton Baton, a mix of oak-aged English strong ale and 90 Minute IPA, might be priced and ready by Friday night.

Ecaussinnes Ultrabrune - 11.2 oz - A large (10% abv) and malty brown ale with an intriguing trace of Scotch caramelized malt flavor, a fine and full mouth feel, and a noteworthy impression overall.

Goliath Tripel - 750 ml - Rare all-malt Belgian Tripel, brewed in Wallonia in a converted 14th-century castle, and named for the "giant" that leads the Parade of the Giants each year in nearby Ath.

Publicanista! ... January 19, 2006.

In this edition of Publicanista!:

Poor Richard's "Old Lightning Rod" Ale debut breaks draft beer records; cask-conditioned firkin will be pouring this Friday (January 20).

NABC serving tanks coming on line, and Croupier and Bob's brewed.

Bistro New Albany set for January 30 (Monday) opening date.

Current draft beer lineup.

REVISED AGAIN: Three first-time Dogfish Head brews appearing on the Rich O's rotating bottle list selections; also new Belgians and bombers.

Cask-conditioned English firkins finally have been shipped. Maybe.

Hours, calendar of events and esoterica.

I. POOR RICHARD'S "OLD LIGHTNING ROD" ALE A GRAND SUCCESS; TRY IT CASK-CONDITIONED THIS FRIDAY, JANUARY 20.

The debut of Poor Richard's "Old Lightning Rod" Ale smashed previous first-night NABC sales records by a considerable margin.

Ben woulda been proud.

On Friday at 1:00 p.m., we'll tap a cask-conditioned firkin of Old Lightning Rod and sample the ale naturally carbonated, the way it would have been served in Colonial times. See below for our weekly links to information on cask ale.

Here's a compilation of previously published links to stories about this special ale, which was brewed nationally by participating craft breweries in celebration of Benjamin Franklin's 300th birthday.

II. NABC BREWERY NEWS: SERVING TANKS COMING ON LINE, AND BATCHES OF CROUPIER IPA AND BOB'S OLD 15-B PUT TO BED.

Jesse and Jared continue to brew at a mad pace. At right, Jared is shown hard at work connecting the beer lines from the serving tanks to the draft station at Sportstime Pizza.

This week, batches of Croupier IPA and Bob's Old 15-B were finished, and now the cycle begins again with Elector, Community Dark and the fast-moving Hoptimus Double IPA.

See "NABC will simplify its core portfolio" for information on the brewing schedule this spring.

Three weeks ago, Jesse squeezed in a batch of what the brew crew is calling Thunderfoot, an Imperial Stout with a difference (circa 10% abv) that will debut at Gravity Head on February 24. More on this recipe will be included with the fact sheet for Gravity Head, which is coming soon.

NABC's final January priority is preparing for demand at the soon-to-open Bistro New Albany (see below).

III. UPDATE: BISTRO NEW ALBANY LOOKS FIRM FOR A JANUARY 30 OPENING.

A visit earlier this week confirmed that our downtown New Albany bistro pioneers, Greg Merz and Dave Clancy, remain knee deep in the from-scratch hoopla that attends opening a restaurant, and although they were intent on a January 23 opening, it looks as though January 30 will be the probable starting date.

Publicanista! ... January 12, 2006.

In this edition of Publicanista!:

Poor Richard's "Old Lightning Rod" Ale to debut on Tuesday, January 17.

NABC Elector, Community Dark and Hoptimus are back on tap, with more to follow.

Now that we have beer, here are general guidelines governing who may buy it.

Bistro New Albany hoping to open for business by the end of January.

Purely random reading at the Potable Curmudgeon's beer blog.

Current draft beer lineup.

REVISED: Rich O's rotating bottle list selections include new Belgians, bombers.

Cask-conditioned English firkins still reportedly coming this way, some sweet day.

Hours, calendar of events and esoterica.

I. POOR RICHARD'S "OLD LIGHTNING ROD" ALE BEGINS POURING ON BENJAMIN FRANKLIN'S 300TH BIRTHDAY (JANUARY 17).

Poor Richard's Ale, which we're subtitling "Old Lightning Rod," is ready for tapping on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, as part of the nationwide Brewers Association promotion celebrating Benjamin Franklin's tercentenary.

Revised and updated: Poor Richard's "Old Lightning Rod" Ale (NABC version) debuts on January 17, 2006.

Thanks to the local press for its coverage:

Poor Richard's "Old Lightning Rod" Ale in the C-J.

"Old Lightning Rod" Ale returns (in LEO).

II. NABC BREWERY NEWS: ELECTOR, COMMUNITY DARK AND HOPTIMUS NOW BACK ON TAP.

NABC's brew crew is brewing, finishing the installation of servng tanks and their draft lines, and preparing for demand at the soon-to-open Bistro New Albany. However , there's always time for a sample.

The brewing schedule is being structured to comply with our public declaration that NABC will simplify its core portfolio during the first part of 2006. This is being done primarily to simplify yeast management while establishing a new routine. The Belgian styles, including Tunnel Vision, will return later in the year. Bourbondaddy? We're not sure when the next batch will be. Stay tuned.

Check out Tony Beard's artwork: Three new NABC beer "labels," and more on the way.

Thanks to Jim Bell for his photographic prowess.

III. NABC'S EXPORT BEER PRIORITIES EXPLAINED.

Now's as good a time as any to review the NABC "export" guidelines.

Although NABC has doubled its brewing capacity, the brewery remains small, and the business plan hasn't changed, in that our goal always is to sell as much draft beer by the pint as possible at Rich O's and Sportstime, where quality control is greatest and the profit margin highest.

That said, the Bistro New Albany will be the exclusive downtown New Albany on-premise vendor of NABC beers (we hope four taps minimum, and perhaps five as matters progress).

Stocks permitting, we will periodically supply kegs of NABC beer for special events at New Albany banquet halls, such as the Calumet Club and Culbertson West.

In Jeffersonville, we'll be resuming supplies to the Comeback Inn, but nowhere else. There are no current plans for a Clarksville sales outlet.

Our Kentucky licensing has been renewed, but only so that we can participate in the 2006 Brew at the Zoo and occasionally offer a guest tap at the BBC Tap Room in downtown Louisville if our friends there so desire. Thanks to Scott at BBC for his help in making this possible.

After the preceding export commitments (and festival needs) are filled, and if there's any beer left over, we may (or may not) let it go as dock sales, i.e., for your home draft unit.

I'm not intending to strike a Draconian note; just be aware that there are priorities, and the final decision is mine.

IV. UPDATE: BISTRO NEW ALBANY PLANS JANUARY 23 OPENING.

As we went to press last week, a last-minute flash was appended:

Bistro New Albany to open for business later this month at 148 E. Market Street in downtown New Albany.

Greg and Dave are knee deep in the hoopla, and they're trying to be ready for a January 23 opening, but this is extremely tentative. Stay tuned.

Note: Our wholesaler has not had Sierra Nevada in stock since before Christmas, which accounts for its absence. Owing to the state of Indiana's laws, I cannot buy elsewhere. Yes, the company that has exclusive rights to sell SN has not had the product for three weeks. That's the beer biz, and what I have to go through all the time.

VII.

New Bombers.

Arcadia Hopmouth Double IPA - 22 oz - Big Maris Otter malt backdrop, nicely balanced fresh hop character with sufficient bitterness.

Breckinridge 471 Small Batch Double Hopped IPA - 22 oz - Fine entry level Double IPA, with a drier, grassy hop bite.

Previously posted, and still available in limited quantities:

De Dolle Special Extra Export Stout - 11.2 oz - Preview a Saturnalia draft selection and reflect on Kris's typically eccentric take on a rare (export stout) beer style.

VIII. UPDATED CASK REPORT: DUO STILL SOMEWHERE OUT ON THAT HORIZON.

With apologies to Joe Walsh, confirmation finally has been received that the next wave of English and Scottish cask-conditioned ales are traveling in this direction.

RCH Old Slug Porter and Harvey's Sussex Best (firkins) will be first, perhaps by the first week of January, 2006.

Notice how I add a week or two to this projection with each issue of Publicanista?

J.W.Lees Manchester Star (firkin) looks more like late January, 2006.

The firkin of Harviestoun Old Engine Oil Special Reserve (Scotch barrel-aged) will be delayed until mid-January at the earliest. It might be held for use during Gravity Head 2006, depending on the final arrival date.

IX. EVENTS, HOURS AND RELATED FACTS.

General business hours:

Sportstime Pizza opens at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Rich O’s opens at 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We are not open on Sunday except during special events. The same food and beer is available at all times in both rooms, so you may have lunch and a beer in the Sportstime Pizza dining area during those hours when Rich O’s isn’t open. The brewery is available for a look-see if one of us is around and we’re not busy.

Rich O's: The front dining rooms at Rich O's are designated as non-smoking areas. The bar area and Red Room are open for smoking (cigarettes, cigars, pipes). We strongly discourage clove cigarettes, which are divisive even among smokers.

Sportstime: Smoking is permitted in the entirety of Sportstime Pizza.

2006 events:

Sunday, February 5

Super Bowl XL

As in recent years, Sportstime Pizza will be open for Super Bowl.

Ohio River Valley Folk Festival in Madison, Indiana

No solid information yet, but when out friend Steve Thomas is in charge of the libations, it can’t be anything but good.

----

Saturday, August 12

Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison, Wisconsin.

It’s one the top three beer fests in the nation, a perennial box-office sell-out, and certainly the big event with the most relevance to NABC. Web site information is dated, but will be revised later in 2006.
